A 32-year-old missionary new to Ethiopia found himself assigned to teach a Bible College class to more than 40 older countrymen.
Out of curiosity, he asked the class: “How many of you have been jailed for your faith?”
Nearly every hand in the room shot straight up.
The missionary didn’t yet speak the language and figured the men didn’t understand his English. So he asked a different way.
Then he asked another way. Same reply.
Finally, a kind man in the front row politely asked: “Brother Steve, are you asking how many of us spent time in prison because we are believers in Jesus?”
“Yes!” he replied, “That’s it, that’s what I’m asking.”
The man turned to the group and talked for a moment in his foreign language. A pause.
Then nearly every hand went straight up.
The challenge: give your best, and make an impact.
2 Timothy 2:15 tells us: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”
Today, we’d like to present an opportunity to give your best.
In 2017 we’re organizing people to pray for every state in America – specifically praying 1) that people would engage more in prayer, and 2) that churches would incorporate and encourage corporate prayer.
It’s called PrayAmerica 2017.
We’ll assign each person a state, and each person would pray for the counties within that state on Tuesday and Thursday mornings as part of regular devotions.
We need some more people to cover all 50 states plus Washington, DC.
If you would like to commit to one state for 2017, click here to sign up.
- God I ask that every week church leaders in [state] would encourage and promote corporate prayer within the church
- God I ask that all Christians in [state] would pray continually throughout every day (1 Thess. 5:17)
- Pray for each county by name
